Will Mullins wins for England Schools

Posted by Ryan Coles  |  Posted on 29th September 2014

Belated congratulations to Will Mullins who made a winning debut representing England School Boys in the annual match with their Scottish counterparts.

Will displayed a red hot putter winning both his foursomes and singles to help England to a narrow win.

It was a fitting reward for Will who has worked hard on his game in the last couple of years. He qualified on merit, first winning through the Avon Schools and then in the English Schools qualifier.

Will is now in California at College of the Canyons and we look forward to news of his future success.

From everyone here at Knowle, congratulations.

Knowle Gold Medal

Posted by Ryan Coles  |  Posted on 17th August 2014

The 49th Knowle Gold Medal began in blustery and showery conditions. The course however was in its usual immaculate condition and with the best players in the County assembled, low scoring was expected.

Rodney Tugwell who has played in every event since 1966 was amongst the earlier starters. When Tugwell first played in this event, England were newly crowned World Champions and The Kinks were number 1 with Sunny Afternoon. Remarkable longevity to still be playing to a good enough standard to enter and compete with youngers whose parents weren't born when he started out in this event.

There was a great contrast in scoring with only one player beating par: Joe Harvey from the Kendleshire with a fine 68. Behind him however was the in form David Wood from Chipping Sodbury who returned a 70 and this was matched by Jake Phillips from Cotswold Hills. Last year's winner Nick Day from Henbury was still in contention with a solid 72 as were several others.

There was little to cheer amongst the home players as David Lake & Brad Selwood both disappointed with 76's.

The afternoon scores were somewhat better, Laurie Potter came in with a terrific 67, but he'd left himself too much to do to challenge for the main prizes. David Wood and Joe Harvey slipped back into the pack but Noah Hessey emerged with what looked liked a winning score adding a 69 to his morning 73 for a total of 142.

In the last group, David Lake restored some home pride with an excellent round of 69, but it was playing partner Nick Day who stole the show with a fantastic 66 for a total of 138. This was comfortably good enough to retain the Gold Medal. Well played to Nick, congratulations to Noah and the other prize winners and thank you to the many volunteers who made the event a success.

Louis O'Regan Wins Club Championship

Posted by Ryan Coles  |  Posted on 15th June 2014

Louis O'Regan won this third Club Championship at the weekend.

It wasn't easy for Louis though and he was pushed all the way to a four hole playoff by Knowle Green Keeper and Second Team Captain, Leigh Mordy.

Both players had tied on a total of 145 which was a surprisingly high score compared to recent years, particularly as the weather was warm and calm and the pin positions provided opportunities to make birdies. The players fed back that the greens were firm which meant only a properly struck iron shot from the fairway had a chance of going close to the hole.

There were excellent performances from the up and coming Knowle youngters, Will Mullins and Dan Sheehan who only just missed out on the playoff.

Leigh held a one shot lead going into the fourth and final playoff hole but it seems a 3.45am alarm to help prepare the course before play took its toll as he badly hooked his tee shot into a ditch. Louis seized his chance and made a birdie four to clinch his third championship.

The presentation and quality of the Course was outstanding and credit must go to Green Keeper Mike Sage and our staff. Thanks are also due to the many volunteers who helped make the event such a success: Brian Meredith, Mike Austin, Rob Eadsforth, Jim Morgan, David Roman, Richard Hall & Nick Durston.
